Tears of joy as GAF wins volleyball championship in Ziguinchor

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Female Volleyball Team are the champions of the 4th volleyball championship hosted in Ziguinchor, Senegal.

The yearly championship, which took place at the stadium municipality of Pedro Gomez and Santhiaba Volleyball Courts, brought together The Gambia, Mali, Guinea Conakry and host Senegal.

The championship, according to GAF Media Officer Paul Steven Prierra, started with group stage matches, which GAF topped its group and was drawn against country fellows Gamtel Volleyball Team in the semi finals.

GAF won their rivals by three sets to two. The Khaki Girls took up Mali in the finals of the female category, which they won by three sets to two.

Paul Steven Prierra reports that during the closing ceremony, head coach of GAF Lamin LF Badjie was awarded the best coach in the female category, GAF female referee Fatou IF Colley was certificated the best referee in the international volleyball championship. GAF player Saffie Sawaneh was certified as the best blocker and was also selected among the seven best players of the championship and Fatou sillah of GAF was certificated as the youngest, best attacker and player of the championship.

Head coach Lamin LF Badjie said it was a great experience for him and the players to be in the international volleyball championship. Nyima Demba, the team captain said the tournament helped to expose the players.
