Scorpions rise in FIFA ranking

The Gambia has gained three places up in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking to lie at 158 in the world and 50 in Africa.

The rankings, released by world football governing body, FIFA, on Thursday morning, places the Scorpions just above Mauritius, São Tomé e Príncipe, Djibouti, Seychelles, Eritrea and Somalia on the African continent.

Hamza Barry to face Everton in UEFA Europa League

Scorpions midfielder Hamza Barry’s Croatian side Hajduk Split have been handed the tough UEFA Europa League qualifying task of meeting English Premier League club Everton to reach the group phase.

The Gambia international and his team will travel to Goodison Park for the first leg of the tie on August 17 before hosting a side featuring former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney at their 35,000-capacity Stadion Poljud on August 24.

Winning debut for Saidy Janko

Scorpions-eligible Saidy Janko made his debut for Saint-Etienne who beat Champions League hopefuls Nice 1-0 on the opening day of the French Ligue 1 season.

The 21-year-old was given a place at right-back by coach Óscar García and he didn’t disappoint as he guided the team to victory.

Steve fires Yanbian to victory

Scorpions forward Bubacarr Trawally fired in his sixth goal of the season in Yanbian Fude’s 3-1 cruising over Tianjin TEDA on Wednesday morning.

Yanbian, who have not won a game since July 8, brought their five-game winless run to an end at the Yanji Nationwide Fitness Centre Stadium but it didn’t come without scare as the visitors took the lead through Yang Liyu in the 23rd minute.
