Gambia soar in latest FIFA ranking

The Gambia have moved up three places on the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking released by world football’s governing body on Thursday.

The Scorpions moved from 166 to 163 in the latest ranking after securing a 1-1 draw with Algeria in the final qualifying match for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on March 22.

Red Scorpions have won the national Women’s First Division league after defeating nearest challengers to the title to establish an unassailable nine point lead with only two matches to spare.

In a top of the table clash at the National Technical Training Centre at Old Yundum, the defending champions Interior FC had the chance to cut Red Scorpions’ lead at the top to just three points heading into the final two matches but their 2-0 defeat at the hands of their traditional rivals instead means they have surrendered their crown to the Jeshwang-based side who would no longer be caught on the standing.

In England, Scorpions winger Modou Barrow turned provider before scoring for Reading FC whose fight for survival took a positive twist as they beat high-flying Preston North End 2-1 at Madejski Stadium.

Looking doomed as they head into Week 17 of the Gambia’s First Division league, PSV Wellingara’s slim quest for survival received a welcome boost on Friday when they stunned title hopefuls Brikama United with a 1-0 win at the Box Bar mini stadium.

For the first time in their history, the Wellingara-based side’s points in the top flight reached double figures with the three points taking the maiden first division campaigners to 11 points, five adrift of safety with night matches remaining.
