Papa Gassama billed for Ahly vs Sundowns clash

The Referees Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have chosen Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama to take charge of the CAF Champions League second leg quarter final match between Al-Ahly of Egypt and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

The 40-year-old, who officiated Al Nassr’s 5-0 thumping of Al Raed in the Saudi Premier League last Thursday, will be assisted by Senegalese duo Djibril Camara and El Hadji Malick Samba as 1st and 2nd assistant referees respectively.

Saintfiet defends Sanneh’s struggles at Anderlecht

Gambia national team coach Tom Saintfiet has heaped praise on Bubacarr Sanneh amid the Scorpions defender’s struggles at Belgian club Anderlecht.

The 24-year-old, who signed a five-year contract with the Belgian giants from Danish champions FC Midtjylland in August, has struggled for game time since the sacking of Hein Vanhaezebrouck in January with new gaffer Fred Rutten preferring a partnership between Kara Mbodji and James Lawrence.

Sports Minister briefed on SJAG’s 10th Sports Awards Night

The President of the Sports Journalists’ Association of the Gambia (SJAG) Musa Sise last Friday met the country’s sports minister Hadrammeh Sidibeh at his office in Banjul to brief him on the upcoming 10th edition of the association’s National Sports Awards Night.

The 2019 edition is scheduled for the 20th of April at the prestigious Coco Ocean Hotel in Bijilo with the event meant to honour, award and celebrate present and past sports men and women, within and outside of the country for their achievements in their different sporting disciplines with three hundred and fifty guests invited to witness the glamorous night.

Ceesay nets second goal

Striker Assan Ceesay was in joyous mood at the weekend as he scored his second goal of the campaign for FC Zürich who were held to a 1-1 draw at basement side Grasshopper.

The Scorpions international, whose last goal came in a 2-1 win at FC Sion in September, raced down the wings after a through ball from teammate Levan Kharabadze before unleashing a left-footed shot past the home side’s goalkeeper in the 30th minute.
