Joseph Colley leaves Chelsea for Chievo

Gambia-born defender Joseph Colley has left English Premier League side Chelsea to join Italian Series B club A.C. Chievo Verona.

The 20-year-old, who has been with the Blues since 2015, reportedly rejected a contract extension offered to him by the London-based outfit after failing to make a first-team appearance since joining the club from Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna.

“Joseph Colley has turned down [an] offer to extend [his contract] and leaves Chelsea FC. Now he signed with AC Chievo Verona in Serie B,” his agent Sami Salonen revealed.

The Kanifing-born player is a right-sided powerful defender who is comfortable also playing on the left and likes to bring the ball out of defence.

He was a regular for the Chelsea youth team as they won the south section of the league for the second year running.

Colley, who is eligible for The Gambia at both senior and junior levels, has represented Sweden Under-17s, captaining the side at the European Championship finals for that age group in May 2016 and then featuring for the Under-19s in the same tournament the following summer.

He now joins compatriot and youngster Musa Juwara at the Italian second-tier club.
