Touray nets as Salford push for promotion

Scorpions left-back Ibou Touray was on the scoring sheet for Salford City who continued their push for the National League (fifth-tier) title with a decisive 3-0 victory over Maidenhead United at the weekend.

The 24-year-old, who starred in the Gambia’s 1-1 draw in Algeria in the final round of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last month, extended Salford’s lead after 27 minutes before Adam Rooney’s goal established a comfortable 3-0 interval lead.

Touray, who only scored his first Salford goal at Barrow in December, attributed a change in position to more goalscoring opportunities and was pleased to get back on the score sheet.

“It’s good, obviously I’m playing a bit higher in the wing back position so I’m probably more likely to get in the box and stuff but I’m happy to get the goal at home,” he said in his post-match comments.

“I thought we started well, started nice and fast so obviously the timings of the goals were nice, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe scored nice and early then I scored at a good time as well at a time before they could get back into the game. A shame we couldn’t score in the second half but we still got the three points.”

The win sent Salford to second on the standings, two points behind leaders Leyton Orient with three matches to spare.
