Papa Gassama billed for Ahly vs Sundowns clash

The Referees Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have chosen Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama to take charge of the CAF Champions League second leg quarter final match between Al-Ahly of Egypt and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

The 40-year-old, who officiated Al Nassr’s 5-0 thumping of Al Raed in the Saudi Premier League last Thursday, will be assisted by Senegalese duo Djibril Camara and El Hadji Malick Samba as 1st and 2nd assistant referees respectively.

The match will be a tough mountain to climb for Al-Ahly, who will have to overturn a 5-0 deficit at the Egyptian Army Stadium in Suez.

Their five-goal thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg was the biggest defeat in some 77 years for the Cairo giants and leaves coach Martín Lasarte’s job hanging by a thread.

The loss was the heaviest defeat Ahly had suffered in international competition and their worst since Zamalek beat them 6-0 in the 1942 Egyptian Cup final – some eight decades ago.
