Gambia unveil squad for Algeria encounter

Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet has named two new players in his squad for the final round of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying trip to Algeria next Friday.

Midfielder Kalifa Manneh, plying his trade in the Italian Serie C (third-tier) with Calcio Catania and striker Nuha Marong of CD Atlético Baleares in the Spanish Segunda División B (fourth-tier) are the new faces in the team that is headlined by the return of Omar Colley.

The Sampdoria defender will mark his return to the squad for the first time in nearly a year after last featuring for the Scorpions in a 1-1 friendly draw with the Central African Republic with his last competitive game coming in a 1-0 defeat in Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers under Sang Ndong.

The 26-year-old’s inclusion will be a huge boost for the Scorpions who will be without Saintfiet’s favoured-captain Pa Modou Jagne, who is recuperating from injury and forwards Lamin Jallow and Assan Ceesay, who miss out through suspensions.

Ibou Touray also marks his return to the squad after two-years with the Salford City left-back’s last Scorpion outing being in a 2-1 defeat in Mauritania in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March 2016.

The trio of Sulayman Marreh, Yusupha Bobb and Alasana Manneh miss out from the last squad against Benin while Gamtel’s Ngine Faye Njie is the only local inclusion.

The first leg of the tie saw both sides drew 1-1 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau last year with already-qualified Algeria only playing for pride at home.

Algeria top AFCON qualifying Group D with 10 points after five matches, followed by Benin (7 points), the Gambia (5) and Togo (5).
