Steve explains failed Midtjylland move

Gambia forward Bubacarr ‘Steve’ Trawally has confirmed he wanted to join FC Midtjylland on January’s transfer deadline day but insists he’s happy to play for Al-Shabab FC Riyadh.

The 24-year-old could have joined the Danish champions before penning a deal in Saudi Arabia but reveals the move to Midtjylland failed after Vejle Boldklub, the club who had his rights, rejected their €2m bid for him.

Steve, who left Chinese club Guizhou Hengfeng after its relegation from the Super League last season,  travelled to the Nordic country in January for talks with Midtjylland before agreeing personal terms but Vejle wouldn’t sanction the move due to the club being direct rivals in the Danish Superliga.

“In my time in Denmark I met with some people from FC Midtjylland, and they showed a lot of interest in me. I would have loved to move there if the negotiations ended well,” he revealed.

He confirmed speaking with compatriot Bubacarr Sanneh, former Midtjylland player, about the proposed move to the Herning-based club saying: “I asked Buba about the club and he said positive things. I had a good conversation with them, but unfortunately they did not succeed [in agreeing with Vejle].”

“It wasn’t me (who made the deal not to go through), it was the negotiations between the two clubs that failed but nonetheless, I am happy to come to Saudi Arabia and play for Al-Shabab.”

Steve, who also had a €300,000 loan offer from Belgian side K.A.A. Gent on deadline day rejected, penned a deal with the Saudi outfit until June 2022.
