Gambia explains CHAN withdrawal

The Gambia Football Federation has confirmed the country’s withdrawal from the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament set to be held in Ethiopia.

The GFF says it didn’t register for the competition set to be staged early next year due to financial constraints with their calls for government to take over the responsibility of the national teams hitting a dead end.

“The reason for the Federation’s decision is premised by the fact that participation of our national teams in competitions has a serious financial strain on us and at this point in time we do not have the required finances to register all our teams in competitions,” the Federation said in a released statement.

It added that: “Even though it is our desire to see all category of our national teams participating in competitions, due to the above stated reason, a decision was made not to register the CHAN Team for this competition.”

The African Nations Championship, better known as the CHAN, is a competition designed by CAF to give an opportunity to footballers who ply their trade in their domestic leagues.
