Scorpions share spoils with Warriors in AFCON qualifiers

The Gambia held visiting Algeria to a 1-1 draw in match day two of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifier played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Saturday.

The match, which was delayed for two hours due to security concerns at the stadium with more than 40,000 fans in attendance, saw the Desert Warriors take the lead through Al Sadd SC striker Baghdad Bounedjah in the 47th minute.

But undeterred, the Scorpions responded quickly through new FC Zürich signing Assan Ceesay who tapped in Lamin Jallow’s low cross past veteran Algerian keeper Raïs M’Bolhi to a cacophony of cheers from the Scorpions supporters.

The two teams fought hard to secure the winner in the closing stages but Tunisian referee Youssef Essrayri had enough as he blew his whistle after four minutes of regular time to ensure both sides shared the spoils.

The result ensures the Gambia remain third on Group D with a point while Algeria continue to lead the standings with four points.

The Scorpions, who lost 1-0 away to Benin in their first Group D game in June 2017, will travel to Lomé in match day three of the qualifiers to face Togo on October 10 before hosting the Sparrowhawks in Banjul three days later.
