Gambia U17 drawn in WAFU Group B for AFCON qualifiers

The Gambia is set to clash with Liberia and defending champions Mali in Group B of the qualifiers for the 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

The Baby Scorpions were pitted against their West African rivals in WAFU zone A with the qualifiers taking place from September 9-18 in neighboring Senegal.

The qualifiers for the U-17 will for the first time be played on a regional basis to determine the seven teams to join hosts Tanzania for next year’s final tournament.

Monday’s draw in the Senegalese capital of Dakar also saw the hosts drawn in Group A alongside Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone while Group C pits Guinea Conakry, Mauritania and Cape Verde.

The two finalists from the qualifiers will sail through to the final tournament in Tanzania.

Gambia, one of four successful nations in the U-17 with two titles, will have to undergo mandatory MRI scan to determine whether players fall within the eligible age of the competition.

The Gambia has appeared in the U-17 four times, winning the championship twice in 2005, when it hosted it and in 2009 in Algeria.
