Scorpions-eligible Saidy Janko joins FC Porto

Portuguese champions FC Porto have secured the signature of Gambian right-back Saidy Janko on a four-year deal from French side AS Saint-Étienne.

The defender, still eligible for the Scorpions, was sold to Saint-Étienne in 2017 by Celtic and his fine form in France earned him a move to the European giants.

“I’m blessed, as this is a great opportunity for me and I’m happy to be here. FC Porto is a great club, I’m honoured to be here and to wear this blue and white jersey is a dream come true”, the defender said on the club’s official website on his first statement as a Dragon.

“I’m a player with physical capacity and fast on the wing. That is my style of play”, Saidy added, introducing himself.

The 22-year-old right fullback started being noticed at FC Zürich and Manchester United kept an eye on him. In 2013, he moved to England, at just 17 years old, and was named Reserve Player of the Year by the end of his first season. In August 2014, the young Swiss player did his debut for the main team of Man. United.

Celtic signed Janko from Manchester United in 2015 but the right-back struggled to make an impact. He played just seven times during Brendan Rodgers’ first season at Parkhead in 2016/17 and was loaned to Barnsley.

He was sold to Saint-Etienne in July 2017 and played 22 times for the Saints as they finished 7th in Ligue 1.
