A long time football follower, now Gambia’s President, Adama Barrow has paid homage to the Gambian football legends and veteran sports journalist Pap Saine for their contributions to the development and promotion of football.

He said the football legend Alhagie Njie Biri-Biri has not only been his neighbor in Banjul, but he (Barrow) has been a fan of Biri Biri and Wallidan football club.

President Barrow was speaking on Friday when he met the 2018 WAFU winning Gambia U-20 team at the State House in Banjul.

To the veteran sports journalist Pap Saine, who was also in the midst of the delegation to the seat of the presidency, President Barrow acknowledged his contribution to Gambian sports saying: “he knows everything about Gambian football.”

As a football fan, Barrow said he has been following Gambian football since in the 70s. “We used to have great players – players like Biri-Biri Njie, Baboucarr Laos, Sang Ndong, Kebba Diaz, Star Jallow, Paul Ogu, Lamin Owens and Malamin Badgie and many others.”

“They used to raise our hopes very high especially in the Zone 2, but we were not successful in winning any trophy. I can remember we played two Zone 2 finals against Senegal but we were not successful as you [U-20] do today.”
