Scorpions-eligible Sonko leaves AIK for Östersunds

Gambian defender Noah Sonko-Sundberg has left one of Sweden’s top clubs in AIK Solna to join their Allsvenskan rivals Östersunds FK on a three-year contract.

Sonko-Sundberg, who had been a league runner-up in 2013, has been with AIK for the past five years but struggled to cement a place with the Stockholm club, resulting to loan moves to GIF Sundsvall.

Sundsvall had been tipped favorites to secure his services once again either on loan or a permanent move after netting four goals in his two seasons with the club but a move there fell through resulting to UEFA Europa League Round of 32 qualifiers, Östersunds, to pounce on a move for him.

The 21-year-old sturdy centre-back, who signed the dotted lines until December 2021 on Monday, is Östersund’s third acquisition of the transfer window as they look set to mount a serious defence of their title and also progress through to the next round of the Europa League against Arsenal.

“The club offering me a contract shows that they believe in me. I also think that I will fit in well this time. It is clear that I have followed Östersunds during the year and they have really done very well. It will be fun to be part of this team,” Sonko-Sundberg said on the club’s official website.

Sonko-Sundberg, hoping to follow the footsteps of compatriot Modou Barrow, who made the move from Östersunds to the Swansea City in the Premier League, added: “It feels like a good club to develop in.”

Sonko, who has represented Sweden at U17, U19 and U21 levels, has been courted by the Gambia Football Federation for him to switch allegiance to play for the Scorpions.
