Gambia: More sports personalities switching to politics

Many sports personalities are switching to politics as the Gambia prepares for the Local Government Elections on 12th April 2018.

Adama Kelipha Halla Samba, who served as Vice President in Gambian Football under Seedy Kinteh, is the latest to add to the number of mayoral aspirants.

Papa Njie, President of The Gambia Basketball Association is also vying for the highly populated Kanifing Municipality. He has been in the past busy canvassing support from the people of KM.

And with the election still two months away, many are expecting more sports personalities to declare their intention of contesting.

It is not confirm whether they will be contesting under the banner of any political party or as an independent candidate, as political parties are yet to unveiled their respective candidates.

What does it mean for sport?

With Gambian sports drastically going down as a result of low funding, it is believed that the election of any of the aspiring candidates might be a game-changer in attracting more support from the local councils.

In terms of infrastructure, there is little to celebrate about and with their involvement in sports, they would be expected to give priority to sports infrastructures if they are to enjoy the support of sports enthusiasts.
