Gambia Armed Forces and Hawks know CAF club opponents

Gambia’s League champions Armed Forces have been drawn with Zambian side Zanaco FC in the preliminary round of the 2018 CAF Champions League qualifiers.

Armed Forces, who scooped their third Gambian top flight league title last season, will be entering into Africa’s top club competition for the second time since 2010.

They travel to the Zambian capital of Lusaka on the weekend of 9-11 February 2018 to face off with Zanaco, who reached the group stage in 2017 before welcoming them in Banjul a week later.

Meanwhile, Gambia’s Cup winners, Hawks, have been paired with Nigerian Cup champions Akwa United in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers.

Hawks, four time Cup winners, enters into the Confederation Cup for the first time since 2007, when they last exited the competition in the first round after losing to Nigerian opponent Dolphins Port Harcourt.

The first leg of the tie will be played at the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on the weekend of 9-11 February 2018 before Hawks hosts them a week later.

The draw for the preliminary rounds of the CAF Inter-clubs was conducted on Wednesday during the meeting of the CAF Inter-clubs Committee at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Fifty-nine (59) were engaged for the Total CAF Champions League 2018 and fifty-four (54) for the Total CAF Confederation Cup 2018.

Only eight federations did not engage their clubs namely Cape Verde, Chad, Eritrea, Namibia, Reunion, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone and Somalia.
