Gambia’s AFCON hopes end after Algeria draw

The Gambia’s feint hopes of qualifying to an Africa Cup of Nations tournament has come to an end after failing to win in Algeria in its final qualifying match in Group D on Friday evening.

Algeria, already qualified to the 2019 AFCON to be held in Egypt, hosted a Gambia side who were hoping for something of a miracle in Blida, a venue where the Fennecs never tasted defeat.

Eupen turn Marreh loan move permanent

Belgian side KAS Eupen have turned the loan spell of Gambia midfielder Sulayman Marreh into a permanent move after agreeing a deal with his parent English Premier League club Watford.

Gambia Sports reported in January about the 23-year-old’s intention to secure a permanent stay with the Eupen-based side as he became disillusioned with life at Premier League side Watford, where he has failed to feature since joining in 2017.

Papa Gassama to officiate Cameroon V Comoros AFCON clash

Celebrated African referee Bakary Papa Gassama will officiate defending champions Cameroon’s final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B qualifying match against Comoros this weekend.

The 40-year-old, who took charge of the AFCON qualifying fixture between South Africa and Nigeria in November, will be assisted by compatriots Abdul Aziz Bollel Jawo and Omar Darboe with Maudo Jallow serving as the fourth official.
